St Mary the Virgin Church,Downe kent

1400-1799 The steeple must have been built by the 16th century, because an inventory of 1552 refers to three bells. Two of these made by William Dawe of London (1385-1418) and one, maker unknown, dated 1511. The remaining three were added early this century.

Apart from the previously mentioned lancet window, the other windows were substituted during the Perpendicular period (15th or early 16th century), although they were extensively restored by the Victorians.

The font appears to belong to this period and is undistinguished, probably local work. At some time its stonework has been defaced.

The brass in the nave floor in memory of Tomas Petle and his wife Isabella is undated but probably late 15th century. The Petley family was prominent in Downe between the 13th and 16th centuries and a house in the village is called Petleys.

The Manning family was also numerous and important, and a brass in the nave records the death of John in 1543. Another brass in the chancel shows the family arms and motto and records that Edward, the son of the last Manning buried in Downe, died in 1622 at the age of 20, having been page to Prince Charles, later King Charles I.

During recent repair work, the nave floor was taken up and revealed the broken remains of inscriptions which had covered coffins, now disintegrated. One fragment refers to John Bederenden, a citizen of London, an MP and draper, who died in 1445, although it is not clear why he was buried in Downe.

In 1538, Thomas Cromwell, Vicar General to King Henry VIII, ordered registers of births, marriages and deaths to be kept. In our diocese of Rochester, Downe possesses one of the only ten to survive from this time, although it is now kept for safety with most of the church's old records at Bromley Library.

ORIGINS
The family of Manning had their early origin in Germany, and in the 4th or 5th century went fromSaxony, in the lower part of that country, to England, where at first the family consisted of three
branches, one in County Kent, one in Sussex, and another in Norfolk. In Kent we find Ranuloph de Manning, of Manheim, Lord of Manheimm, who married the aunt of King Harold. His son, Simon de Manning, was Lord of Betred's Castle at Downe, County Kent.He was the first English baron to go with King Richard the Lion Hearted to the Crusades in 1190. Simon de Manning is the ancestor of the Mannings of Downe and
Cudham, who were knights marshall of the household of England's sovereigns for about 400 years. The Mannings in Ireland arrived during the reign of Henry II, 1154 - 1189. Sir Henry Manning, Knight Marshall to Henry VII, had a grandson, John Manning who had a grant of part of the possessions of the Earl of Desmond, in Ireland. In 1600 he joined the Earl of Essex in an expedition to the land of theIrish people. Branches of the Manning family from England and Ireland emigrated to North America
and settled in Nova Scotia, New England, New York, New Jersey,Virginia and the Carolinas. Mannings are noww living all across Canada and the United States.

Notes for John Manning

In 1405 he exchanged Wakelins Field in Downe for two fields below Cudham Park. On 7 Dec 1407 he was one of eight men commissioned to collect taxes in Kent. [22]

"In his account of St. Mary Cray, Hasted (Vol. I., p. 141) describes Kevington as a manor and seat in that parish, 'now (he says) vulgarly called Kevingtown.' This estate was for some generations the residence of the Mannngs. Here also the reader may find some account of this family. He speaks of John Manning as settled in the parish of Cowdham in the reign of K. Henry IV." [402]

"Kevington is a manor and seat in this parish [St. Mary Cray,
Kent] now vulgarly called Kebingtown. {fn Augtn. Off. Parl. Surveys.}
This estate was, for some generations, the residence, of the Mannings,
a family of good account in this part of Kent, who took their name
from a town so called in Saxony. {fn Guillim, p. 138.} from whence
they came very early into this kingdom. In the reign of king Henry
IV. John Manning {Vis. Co. Kent, anno 1619. Pedigree of Manning.} was
settled in Cowdham". [408]

"The Heraldic Visitation of Kent, taken in the year 1619, gives
the arms of Manning, "Gules, a cross patonce between four cinquefoils
or." Notwithstanding which it appears by their monuments and grave
stones in this church, which was the burial place of the family for
many generations, that the Mannings of this parish bore the
cinquefoils in their coat of arms slipt; those of Westerham bore, "A
chevron between three cinquefoils slipt. [further descendents of
Manning given.]
( vol ii p 117/8)" [408]

"Johannes Manning, de Codham, Obit anno 13 Henry 4th; married Alicia, filia . . . Walden de Com. Cantii." [413]

Hugh Manning lived in Saint Mary's Cray, Kent, which is but six miles north of Cowdham, his ancestral home. The Visitation pedigree of the Manning family has him married to the aunt of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, that is, a daughter of Sir William Brandon. No documentary evidence of this marriage or any relationship can be found. Probably there was some more remote relationship that gave rise to the legend. If true, she would have to have been one of the two Margarets, daughters of Sir William Brandon and Elizabeth Wingfield, and there would have been a royal lineage thru the Wingfields. Hugh and his wife died early and that helps explain the lack of records for them. St. Mary's Cray, with its church dedicated to Saint Mary, lies five miles NNE of Downe, Kent. Within this church lies Hugh Manning and his wife and several more generations of this family. There is a mural monument for one of the Mannings and a fine brass memorial to Richard Manning, and his wife Rachel, he the grandson of Richard, son of Hugh.

History of Co. C, 5th KY

The men of the 5th Kentucky Co. C were predominately from Morgan and Bath counties. From 1861-1863 they served under Gen. Humphrey Marshall in the Army of Eastern Kentucky. This period found the 5th Kentucky in Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky, fighting at Ivy Mt., Ky, Middle Creek, Ky, and Princeton, Va, while always trying to liberate their state from Federal forces.

In May 1863 Gen. William Preston succeeded Gen. Marshall in command of the Army of Eastern Kentucky. Around this time Preston's command was ordered to Knoxville, Tennessee to form a division in gen. Simon B. Buckner's Corps of the Army of Tennessee. On Sept 19th & 20th, 1863 the 5th Kentucky took part in the Battle of Chickamauga, assaulting U.S. Gen. George Thomas' forces and reaching the crest of the famed Snodgrass Hill. During the Siege of Chattanooga, following Chickamauga, the 5th was transferred to the 1st Kentucky Brigade better known as the Orphan Brigade. The 5th Ky operated with the Orphan's for the remainder of the war.

The Orphans marched with the Army of Tennessee throughout the Atlanta Campaign, fighting at such famous places as Ringold Gap, Resaca, Kennessaw Mt., Entrenchment Creek (Atlanta), Peachtree Creek, Jonesboro, and many more. The Orphans were a gallant group of men, receiving more casualties than they had men, and suffering few desertions during the campaign.

With the fall of Atlanta, in September of 1864, the 5th Ky and the rest of the Orphans were finally granted their wish and became mounted infantry for the rest of the war. Their mounted service consisted harassing Sherman's Army on its infamous "March to the Sea" and than fighting delaying actions through the Carolinas. The 5th Ky surrendered on May 6, 1865 in Washington, Georgia. Of the close to 100 men who had enlisted in Co. C, only 27 were present to surrender.

Samuel Manning

Below is a marriage record from Campbell County Kentucky in 1833 for Samuel Manning who married a Vallandingham. My Great Grandfather was Val H Manning (1871-1936) also known as Valandingham Manning according to my father,Walter L Manning. If correct this Samuel Manning is probably the father of Sylvester Manning who was Val's father.

Connection to Pres. Zachary Taylor

Springfield, the Zachary Taylor House in Louisville, Kentucky, was the future President's home until his father's death in 1829.
